Artist
a person who creates art (such as painting, sculpture, music, or writing) using conscious skill and creative imagination.
Merriam Webster
Should I really consider myself an artist? I ask myself that question almost every time I pick up a pencil or sit in front of my computer and open the Photoshop app. Even when working in my woodshop, being creative, that thought crosses my mind. The answer to that question is YES! But, with reservation.
My vision of an artist is someone standing in front of a canvas, a palette of mixed colors in one hand and a brush in the other. That might be my father, but it would not be me.
Instead, you might see me bent over my drafting board with a graphite or color pencil in hand, reproducing a favorite landscape scene that has caught my eye. Instead of a canvas, expect to see a sheet of Bristol smooth on my table, upon which I will magically reproduce the landscape scene the way I envision it.
At other times, you might see me standing before a band saw, preparing a piece of wood for a scratch-built ship or buildings for a model western town. Finally, you might find me working with my computers, my basic tool for all of my hobbies. Perhaps turning out graphic images for my consulting work, inputting the results of my genealogy research into my database or family book, or maybe even creating a website like this one.
